Sentencing for Cycling Tragedy

Posted on 14/02/2011 by John

Today, at Morrinsville District Court, Kristy King was sentenced to 300 hours community service, ordered to pay $30,000 compensation ($10,000 per victim family) and disqualified from driving for one year, for Careless Driving causing the death of three cyclists on 14th November 2010. At the beginning of February, Kristy agreed to take part in separate restorative justice conferences with members of two of the three families who lost their loved ones.  The conferences were facilitated by Tim and Sharon from Out of Court.

The Kristy King case has attracted enormous media interest. TVNZs 20/20 programme was given permission to film one of the restorative justice conferences. The episode, which will include footage of the conference, is expected to air on 24th February 2011.

Out of Court would like to thank everyone who participated for their courage and willingness to take part in the conference. The family of one of the crash victims is organising a bike ride from Whangerei to Wellington to draw attention to the number of cyclists killed or injured on New Zealand's roads.
